Seniors
Killarney Athletic 2 Classic FC 1
Our A's won 2-1 on Saturday last in Woodlawn cementing our grip on 2nd place. Goals from Lukas Polyak again, plus Jamie Doolan opening his account for the season set us on our way.
Killarney Athletic B 2 Annascaul 0
Senior Reserve Cup
Annascaul 0 2 Killarney Athletic B our B team won today in the Reserve Cup away to Annascaul. An early headed goal from Gary Moynihan from Pa McClure corner set Athletic up well for the game. Gary Moynihan suffered an injury just before half time. Athletic had numerous chances throughout the game but couldn’t kill off the game until ten minutes from the end when Jason O’Grady lobbed the keeper to ensure no comeback for the home team. Well done lads. Best for Athletic were youngsters Ole Kleibig, Jason Lyne and Killian O’Regan
Under 15
Killarney Athletic 1 Killarney Celtic 2
An unfortunate defeat for the boys in blue despite dominating the game throughout. The game was only 5minutes old when Celtic scored with a ball over the top. Athletic had numerous chances then with Michael Potts and Aaron Foley having the best attempts but to no avail. Then on the stroke of half time, lovely 1 2s between Padraig O’Brien and David Naughten let Michael Potts through on goal to finish to the bottom corner of the net. The half time whistle was music to Celtics ears giving them a break from Athletics onslaught. In the second half, Athletic didn’t play to the high tempo of the first half but were still on top but Celtic were solid at the back leaving Athletic too long range efforts as our only chances on goal. Celtic then stuck their noses in front with a header from the corner. The game was held up ten minutes near the end when Celtic sub Cathal O’Shea playing with 2 fractured bones in his foot was injured running for the ball. Credit to the referee who prevented him from playing to avoid further injury. Athletic had claims for a penalty in the dying moments when Michael Potts was taken out by the keeper just after narrowly putting the ball wide. Credit to both teams for an exciting game with lovely football played.
Under 13 League
Killarney Athletic 5 Mastergeeha 1
It was back to the league for Athletic under 13 last Saturday when they were away to Mastergeeha. From the first whistle to the last Athletic put in a sterling performance with all the squad playing their part. Playing on a perfect surface Athletic took the lead when Liam Curran hit an unstopable shot from the edge of the box giving the keeper no chance. Finbarr Hickey put Athletic 2 up after good work by Jason Coffey. Indeed Athletic could have been further ahead as the unlucky Jason Coffey hit the same post twice. 2 nil at the break. Mastergeeha came out fighting but failed to score after coming close. Athletic scored a third after a quick breakaway saw Reece Hegarty round the keeper to slot home a fine goal. Athletic were now well on top all over the pitch and were playing some lovely football and when Finbarr Hickey scored a brillant fourth goal it was no more than they deserved. Reece Hegarty got a fifth with another fine finish. Overall this was great team performance with number 1 to 16 playing their part. Well done.
Killarney Athletic A.F.C. Under 11 Development weekend 2013
Date 17th, 18th & 19th May
Robin O’Day is the director of this Under 11 soccer weekend our club is hosting in May.
This event is not a tournament but friendly matches. Emphasis is based on player development. 9 a side matches. Teams play min of 5 games over the weekend. Matches are 30 minutes. This is about clubs coming and playing a minimum of 5 matches each & giving everyone of their players plenty of game time in a fun safe environment. We have clubs coming from 7 different schoolboys leagues. Too many potentially good young players are being destroyed at a young age due to so many coaches win at all cost and instant success philosophy. This philosophy does not encourage players to try things on the pitch hence a fear of doing the wrong thing on the pitch seriously diminishes young players confidence. Let them play, Let them try things, Let them make mistakes, Let them learn from mistakes. This weekend is an ideal scenario for coaches to bring teams to play in uncompetitive situations and play with the freedom that should be done at this age. To learn you first have to make mistakes.
Congratulations: Well done to Robin O’Day on passing the UEFA b licence course.
