Killarney Athletic 3 Asdee 2
It was a great end to what was a difficult season for our Senior team when a great 3-2 win away to Asdee preserved our Premier A status for another year. Our boys won their last 3 games in a row to stay up showing great heart and spirit in doing so. We went 1 nil up on Friday night when youth player Danny Healy who has been a great addition to the A panel let fly with a shot which took a deflection on route to the back of the Asdee net. After this we lost our shape a bit and conceded 2 soft goals to a determined Asdee team. We were then handed a lifeline before half time when an Asdee defender handed the ball in his own box. It fell to the excellent Shane Doolan to pull us level and he clinically dispatched to the Asdee net. Athletic then had 45 minutes to go about winning the game. Athletic performed much better in the 2nd half and had several chances but just could not find the back of the net. Then with 5 minutes or so left Mike Lindsay who had earlier given Asdee the lead with an OG more than made up for it by bulleting a header past the hapless Asdee keeper from one of the numerous corners we got in the second half. Athletic held out comfortably to secure Premier A status for the club. Well done to all the boys for a great end to season, it goes to show that if we can get the right mix of experienced and youth players and put in a sustained effort from the start of the season that Athletic can be right up challenging. Hopefully this good end to the season will encourage everyone to put in this effort next year.
