Killarney Athletic 1 Holycross 3
We made the journey to Bruff in Co Limerick missing a couple of key players, so we were up against it from the start. We started the game well but the poor playing surface stifled our play in the final third with the ball taking some bobble at the crucial stage. Holycross took first blood when their midfielder scored a wonder goal from 30 yards out. Athletic came close to scoring when some nice link up play down the right between Gavin O’Shea and Jack Cahill set up Jack O’Connor and he fired over the bar. Early in the second half confusion in the Athletic defence allowed Holycross to get in for goal no. 2. Athletic came more into the game now with Ronan Murphy moving into midfield and it was Murphy who got us back into the game with a superb free kick that he bent into the top corner. This goal gave us the lift that we needed but Holycross scored their third goal of the game when Steven Cahillane made a top drawer save when he touched the ball onto the post but the ball spun up into the air hit a divot on the pitch and bounced into the goal. Ronan Murphy, Gavin O’Shea and Deavan O’Flaherty all went close but it wasn't to be our day. Best on a frustrating day for us were Ronan Murphy, Gavin O’Shea, Rory O’Riordan, Deavan O’Flaherty, Shane O’Sullivan and Jack O’Connor.
Under 12 Premier League
Killarney Athletic 2 Kingdom Boys 0
Played in perfect conditions both teams were evenly match for the first 10 minutes until an expertly taken corner by Adam O'Shea was headed into the net by Ronan Buckley to put Athletic 1 up. The score stayed at 1 nil up to the interval with neither side creating any clear cut chances. The start of the second half was much the same with Athletic slowly getting the better of it and Adam O'Shea was unlucky not to put Athletic 2 ahead when he headed just wide. We eventually made certain of the 3 points when Dylan O'Sullivan was put through to stick the ball in the corner of the net. This was a hard earned victory with best on the day for Athletic Dylan O'Sullivan, Ronan Buckley and Man of the match Jack Lenihan.
Under 16 Girls‏
Killarney Athletic 1 Listowel 5
Athletic were playing their first game of the New Year and only their second of the season. Athletic opened brightly and Eimear Foley was unlucky not to put Athletic ahead in the tenth minute. Athletic had further chances from Lucy Egan & Fiona Lacey but were hit by a Listowel goal two minutes from half time. Athletic attacked from the start again and Megan Kiely leveled the game with a twenty yard volley. It was looking good with fifteen minutes left but match fitness crept into Athletic’s game and we were hit with a late goal flurry from Listowel. Megan Kiely and Aisling Clifford were outstanding in defense with Aisling Cronin doing well on her debut. In midfield Fiona Lacey, Rachel O’Sullivan, Karen Mathews and Aileen Lavin also on her debut also doing well. While up front Lucey Egan and Eimear Foley ran their socks off.
Congratulations: Congratulations to Shane & Orla on the birth of their baby boy.
