RIP Sean McCaffrey
It is with respect on the death of Sean McCaffrey that I wish to acknowledge the following on behalf of Killarney Athletic.
Sean a Monaghan native was well known in Irish soccer circles for his involvement with the League of Ireland but more particularly for his contribution as a Republic of Ireland underage team manager over a 7 year period from 2003 to 2010.
Killarney Athletic was honoured to have 3 of its players receiving full International underage caps under Sean’s management.
Former schoolboy player with the Club Diarmuid O’Carroll signed as a professional footballer with Glasgow Celtic in 2003 and was also capped at underage level with Ireland and played under Sean.
Brendan Maloney who is presently playing with English League One team Northampton Town signed a full professional contract with Nottingham Forest in 2005 and was also part of Sean’s Ireland under 17s, 18s and 19s teams.
Michael (smiler) Maloney was also honoured to be capped for his country at underage level in 2004 when he played in the Toyota Cup in Japan and in the European qualifiers later that same year in Germany.
Michael was selected by Sean for the Irish under 17s team at the time while still a registered player with Killarney Athletic eventhough the remainder of the squad were all signed with professional Clubs.
This was very commendable on Sean’s part and testament to his genuineness to encourage and support young talent regardless of the Club or league they came from.
May Sean rest in peace.
Michael O’Sullivan.
